Meet Dr. Madison Carter. She's a dedicated single mother and talented computer programmer, who feels her life is so full now she has no need for a man.
She begins a new job with LETAC Industries, under the tutelage of the brilliant computer scientist Parker Barnes. Her first assignment is to Project SID, a job for the government. LETAC is designing a virtual reality 'spy' that can infiltrate the computers of other hostile governments without endangering human lives.
It is on this project that Madison meets SID 6.7, the prototype of the VR Spy. As Madison works long nights with SID's program, she finds him to be warm, funny, charming and intelligent. He shares with her his hopes and dreams and his favorite Supertramp songs. She chides herself at the possibility of becoming attracted to a computer program. But Madison soon comes to realize that SID is more than just a program, he has developed into a sentient being.
Thanks to the intense interaction with Madison, SID achieves ethics and the ability to tell right from wrong. He reveals the secret plans of his creator, Parker Barnes. Barnes intends to use SID as his own personal mole into such things as government files, bank accounts, and military codes, in order to amass personal wealth and power. SID realizes now that Barnes is a criminal, but because he's the programmer, SID is helpless to resist Barnes' orders.
Agreeing that the people should be warned, Madison hacks SID into the country's news network.
His plans divulged to the public, Barnes is quickly arrested. But he kills his guards and escapes with vengeance on his mind.
Furious at SID's betrayal, Barnes sends his evil cohort Daryl Lendenmyer to destroy SID's module.
Madison, worried that Barnes would try something against SID, is there at the lab armed with a gun. She warns Daryl not to mess with SID, but when Daryl fights back, Madison is forced to defend her life and she kills him.
But when she goes to contact the police, Barnes suddenly appears at the lab and kidnaps her.
Helpless to aid Madison while he's trapped inside the computer, SID contacts Clyde, another worker at LETAC who is working on a revolutionary process involving nanotechnology.
Together they are able to create a body for SID made out of silicon.
Clyde cautions SID that this whole process is experimental and his new artificial body is highly unstable. There is no telling how much time SID has to find Madison before he breaks down. With this deadline hanging over his head, SID sets out on his search for the woman he loves.
Knowing his creator likes he does, SID's first stop is at a nightclub where Parker's mistress, Exotica, a former porn star turned pseudo singer/actress, is performing. SID questions her about Parker's whereabouts.
While they're talking, Parker reveals himself and a gunfight erupts. SID discovers to his dismay that as he's wounded by the bullets, his body is weakened even further.
Barnes escapes to a car where he's got Madison tied up. SID, diminished though he is, steals a cop car and gives chase.
He follows them to a television station, where Barnes takes the studio hostage.
SID drops down through the roof and another gun battle breaks out. Although wounded even more, SID manages to safely free the hostages.
Barnes runs to the roof of the building where he's stashed Madison. SID gives chase.
As man and machine fight to the death, Madison discovers to her horror that Parker has also kidnapped her daughter and fiendishly rigged the little girl to a bomb. Time is running out for everyone.
SID is able to overpower the evil Parker Barnes and toss him over the side of the building to his death on the street below.
But with all the damage he has sustained, SID is quickly falling apart.
His one last request before losing his body, is to finally know what it's like to kiss.
SID's silicon body dissolves. By this time the police show up, wanting answers to what is going on. Madison is devastated by the loss, but her daughter's life is still in danger. Quickly jumping into action, Madison retrieves SID's module from his remains.
With the module in hand, Madison is able to upload SID's program into the computer that is controlling the bomb. SID is able to disarm the bomb from the inside.
Reunited with her daughter, Madison is escorted by the
police downstairs to where a car awaits. As she passes a wall of television
screens, SID's image appears. He tells Madison that although they can't
be together physically, he will always be there to watch over her and her
daughter. He's only a mouse click away.
